Scouting’s Commitment to Sustainable Development and Peace
Humanising globalisation:
The main challenge today is to ensure that globalisation is positive and equitable for everyone throughout the world. Each one of us can become more aware of the challenges involved and take personal action wherever we live.
Peace and sustainable development:
Too many men and women continue to suffer; too many are victims of violence and injustice. Helping to improve people’s well-being includes helping to build a peaceful world and ensure sustainable development.
By doing their best to abide by the Scout Law and Promise and by making the most of opportunities to get to know others, we can make a unique contribution to developing mutual understanding between peoples and promoting peace in the world, both individually and together.
“Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. We all need to seek concrete ways of helping to improve life around us today and to “leave the world a better place” than we found it for future generations.
A protected environment:
In order to manage our natural resources and protect our environment, we need to help develop a greater understanding of the delicate equilibrium between nature and the man-made world. Whether we live in rural or urban areas, through learning to care for the environment in an active way, we can all help to improve our relationship with the natural world.
A democratic governance:
Democratic governance is an active process. We can all help to promote respect for human rights and play an active and constructive role in how we are governed. By experiencing what citizenship means and by practising democratic governance today, we can help promote world peace through upholding the principles of democracy and justice for all.
Youth employment:
Enjoying a satisfying and productive professional life needs more than simply being able to do the job. Through Scouting, we can maximise our chances by learning to take on real responsibility, cooperate in teams and experience leadership, take initiative, find creative solutions to problems, appreciate the best in other people, and much more.
Ensuring respect for cultural diversity:
In order to live together in greater harmony, we need to promote greater cultural awareness, mutual understanding and intercultural communication. In a spirit of true brotherhood, each of us can make a difference by overcoming preconceived ideas, reaching out to others and learning to understand and appreciate the richness of different cultures and ways of life.
A more just society:
To help combat social injustice, we need to help develop greater awareness of human needs (access to water, health care, human rights, etc.). Each of us can take action to help bring about social changes that can make the world a more just and human place. |
